How to turn a spreadsheet into film end credits.

Import the cast and crew list, review the proposed structure, choose static cards or a roll, and export a delivery file. A rigid template is not required, but a few source-sheet habits make the result easier to verify.

The short workflow

Edit Credits is a browser-based end credits editor for film, television and video productions. It turns a source list into an editable proposal rather than flattening the spreadsheet into one text layer.

  1. ImportChoose a spreadsheet or a public Google Sheet and select the relevant tabs.
  2. ReviewCheck roles, names, departments and anything marked Needs review.
  3. DesignSet typography, columns, spacing, card timing and roll motion without re-entering the credits.
  4. ExportRun preflight and create a review document, image sequence or video master.
02

Supported spreadsheet sources

You can upload XLSX, XLS, CSV or TSV files. You can also import a public Google Sheet shared by link. Google Sheets import is not private OAuth access or live synchronization: the sheet must be reachable through its shared link, and a later source change does not silently overwrite the project.

The source can contain several tabs. Select the tabs that actually describe the credits so schedules, budgets and unrelated production notes are not treated as title content.

03

Prepare the sheet without rebuilding it

No fixed film credits template is required. The goal is simply to leave enough evidence for a person—or an importer—to understand what belongs together.

  • Keep a role close to the person, company or character it describes.
  • Keep department headings such as Camera, Art Department or Music in their own cells.
  • Put technical comments such as “duplicate”, “replace” or card numbers in a distinct notes column.
  • Do not delete blank rows that intentionally separate departments; spacing is useful structural evidence.
  • Check merged and hidden cells if important names appear to be missing from the visible sheet.

What semantic import actually does

The importer examines text together with cell position, row order, columns, merged areas and section context. It proposes source-backed blocks: for example, a role and several names, a cast table, a music record or a legal card.

It is a proposal, not an invisible final decision. Clear relationships become editable fields. A genuinely uncertain cell is retained in Needs review so you can place or ignore it deliberately. Before export, review names, role ownership, music details, logos and legal copy against the approved source.

05

Choose the structure that matches the credit

Role / Name

The common structure for crew and cast. One role can have several independently editable names.

Group and table

Useful for cast lists, departments and source material with three or more meaningful columns.

Music / Media

Keeps track title, writers, performers, publishers and other music details together.

Text and freeform

For legal language, acknowledgements and layouts that do not fit a standard pair.

Logo grid

Arranges partner marks in one editable block and previews them at output resolution.

Static, roll or mixed

Use cards, continuous rolling credits or both in the same project timeline.

06

Choose an output for review or finishing

H.264 / MP4A compact video for review, sharing and straightforward delivery.
ProRes 422 HQA high-quality opaque MOV master for post-production.
ProRes 4444An opaque or transparent MOV for an editor or compositor.
PDF cardsA multipage approval document with one static credit card per page.
PNG sequenceRendered frames for image-based finishing workflows.

Preview and server export use the same project timeline and layout model. Preflight still matters: unavailable glyphs can block export, while warnings point to content or presentation that deserves a final check.
